The Japan’s Epsilon 6 rocket was launched from the Uchinoura Space Center on the morning of January 12, but the launch failed due to an anomaly with the rocket. Seven minutes after liftoff, the rocket was destroyed and fell into the sea east of the Philippines. JAXA said, “Due to an anomaly in the rocket’s posture, we determined that we could not inject the rocket into its scheduled orbit”. This was the first failure for Epsilon, which had succeeded in five consecutive launches since its first launch. It is also the first time that a JAXA rocket has failed to launch since the H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 6 in 2003. Yasuhiro Funo of JAXA, who was in charge of the launch this time, said, “We determined that the rocket could not be put into the prescribed orbit because of a posture abnormality, so we issued a command and destroyed it. We recognize that it is first of all an urgent task to investigate the cause at an early stage and establish countermeasures”.
